Start/Update Utility Service

To obtain Utility Service in the City of Truth or Consequences

In order to establish utility service in the City you will need the following documents:
  • The address of the property
  • A Photo ID
  • Proof of your Social Security Number or an additional Photo ID
  • If you do not own the property, a letter from the owner granting permission for you to put the utilities in your name or a lease on the property notarized.
  • A letter of excellent credit from your current utility company (For this purpose, a current utility is one that has provided you service within the past 12 months and one that you have used for one year or more.) or you will be required to pay a deposit to establish utility service.  The deposit will be refunded if you have maintained service for 1 year with no late/missed payments or disconnects due to non-payment.  If you terminate services before the year is up and have met the previously conditions, the deposit will be applied to your final bill and any balance will be refunded.
Bring the documents listed above to the Utility Office in City Hall at 505 Sims St., Truth or Consequences, NM 87901 and any of the clerks in the utility office can help you.  In most cases, utility services can be turned on within one business day of your request.  A connection fee of $19.09 for electricity and $19.09 for water will be charged to your first bill.

If you are not going to be present when the crew comes by to turn your utilities on, please make sure that the main breaker to the property is turned off and that all water taps, including those feeding toilets, showers, coolers, sinks etc. are shut.

  • If you have excellent credit with the City on your previous address then any deposit on file can be transferred from your old to new address.
Bring the documents listed above to the Utility Office in City Hall at 505 Sims St., Truth or Consequences, NM 87901 and any of the clerks in the utility office can help you.  In most cases, utility services can be turned on within one business day of your request.  A connection fee of $19.09 for electricity and $19.09 for water will be charged to your first bill at your new address.  There is no charge for disconnecting your service at your old address.

If you want to suspend your utility service temporarily

If you are going to be away for an extended period of time and want to suspend your utility service while you are away you can either:
  • disconnect your service when you leave and reconnect when you return (there is no fee for disconnection but the normal connection fees will apply) or
  • suspend your electric and trash service and leave water/sewer service connected.  In this case, there will be only be a reconnection fee for electricity  but you will continue to be billed for water/sewer service.  Since you are not using any water, this bill will be minimal.
In either case you will need to come in to the Utility Office to make these arrangements and any of the clerks there will help you.
