Area Attractions
Truth or Consequences, once known as Hot Springs New Mexico, is best-known for its geothermal mineral waters , due to the 10 commercial spas located in the historic downtown area. It is also a popular destination for "snowbirds" due to our extremely mild winters. For urbanites, our slower pace provides a welcome respite from bustling big-city environments.
The Rio Grande is here, winding its way past Ralph Edwards Park and the Hot Springs District as part of the Healing Waters Trail, which will eventually provide opportunities for walking, birdwatching, and other recreational activities.
While you're in town, be sure to visit our two museums, the Geronimo Springs Museum and the Dianne Hamilton Military Museum .
The hot days of July are tempered by cooling nights. If you are here in autumn or spring, you may think you've found a little piece of paradise. And if you think the stars come out in Hollywood, you should see the heavens here at night!
Our neighboring community, the City of Elephant Butte , is home to the largest body of water in the state , and can swell in population to 100,000 on holiday weekends during the summer.
Some prefer the quieter Caballo Reservoir, with its majestic backdrop (the Caballo Mountains) and two state parks nearby (both are prime birdwatching spots).
Numerous other diversions are available for visitors - golf courses, ghost towns, artist studios and galleries, the nearby Gila Wilderness - and Spaceport America is being built just 30 miles southeast of Truth or Consequences.
We've included many of these assets on this site's "City A-Z" page, but additional information on what to do in the area can be found on the Sierra County Tourism website , particularly in the Visitor Information section.
