Truth or Consequences Police Department Expands Community Safety Programs

Truth or Consequences, NM — In a continued effort to enhance public safety and strengthen community partnerships, the Truth or Consequences Police Department is promoting two key initiatives: a voluntary Security Camera Registration Program and the Home Watch Service for residents who are away from their properties.
Both programs are designed to support proactive policing, improve emergency response, and foster collaboration between law enforcement and the public.

Voluntary Camera Registration Program
The camera registration initiative invites residents and business owners to voluntarily share the location of their security cameras with the police department. This information helps officers quickly identify potential sources of video evidence when investigating crimes or suspicious activity.
Participation in the program is entirely voluntary and does not grant the department live or direct access to any video feeds. Instead, it provides a map of camera locations and contact information, allowing officers to request footage if needed.
“We don’t have access to your cameras and you aren’t required to provide the footage you capture, but if a crime occurs, we know who might have captured some important footage, said Senior Code Enforcement Officer Tyler Knull. “Think of it as a form of neighborhood watch.”
The program is open to all residents and businesses, regardless of location. Even a single camera facing a street or alleyway can provide crucial evidence in an investigation.

Home Watch Service for Residents
In addition to the camera program, the department offers a Home Watch Service for residents who plan to be away from home for an extended period. This free service allows uniformed officers to periodically check on registered properties, providing peace of mind and an added layer of security.
Regular patrols around unoccupied homes can deter criminal activity such as burglary and vandalism. Officers may also identify issues like broken windows, signs of forced entry, or property damage due to weather—allowing for early intervention before problems escalate.
Residents can customize their Home Watch requests by specifying which areas of the property to monitor or noting any special concerns, such as package deliveries or vulnerable entry points.
Police Chief Tavizon reflected on his professional experience with home watch in Deming, saying it was effective for the number of burglaries down. He is optimistic the program will be as successful for our city.

How to Participate
To register a security camera or enroll in the Home Watch Service, residents can visit the Community Policing Page on the city’s official website or stop by the Truth or Consequences Police Department in person. Both processes are quick and straightforward.
Officer Knull stated, “These programs are about building a stronger relationship with our community. The more we can work together with members of our community, the better we can serve them.”
