Local Pool Passes Inspection with Flying Colors, Set to Open Memorial Day
J.A. Hodges Municipal Swimming Pool in Truth or Consequences
Truth or Consequences, NM —After a thorough inspection by the New Mexico Environmental Department, the local aquatics facility has officially passed its annual safety and sanitation check, clearing the way for a summer season full of swimming and community events.
The inspection, which took place on May 16th, is a mandatory process for all aquatics facilities across the state. It ensures that water quality is safe and that all emergency and mechanical systems are fully operational. According to a facility attendant, the pool has a strong track record and has never been denied a permit.
This year’s inspection was particularly significant due to recent changes in the pool’s chlorination system. The facility transitioned from chlorine tablets to a liquid chlorine system—a move that required staff to recalibrate chemical levels and learn new maintenance procedures.
“It’s been a learning experience,” said a member of the pool staff. “We had to figure out how much liquid chlorine to add, how fast it dissipates, and how to stabilize it. We didn’t realize at first that we needed a stabilizer to prevent the sun from breaking down the chlorine, so we had to quickly adjust.”
After adding cyanuric acid to stabilize the chlorine, the team saw a dramatic improvement in chemical levels. Chlorine readings rose from below-standard levels to a healthy 2.9–3.0 ppm, and pH levels were adjusted to a comfortable 7.4—ideal for swimmer safety and comfort.
“This is probably the most spot-on our chemical levels have ever been during an inspection,” the staff member added.
With the inspection cleared, the pool is now preparing for a busy season. The facility is expected to open to the public on Memorial Day, with free admission on opening day only. A full schedule of hours and events will be released soon. Join the J.A. Hodges Municipal Pool Facebook group for current information about events.
