License My Pet

All dogs and cats owned by residents within the City of Truth or Consequences must be licensed. The license is valid for the duration of the animal’s rabies vaccination, meaning no annual renewal is required as long as the vaccination remains current. Licenses can be obtained through the City Clerk's Office. To apply, pet owners must provide a certificate from their veterinarian confirming the rabies vaccination date and expiration, as well as the pet’s status as intact or spayed/neutered.

Pet License Fees

  • Intact Pets: $50 per term
  • Spayed/Neutered Pets: $5 per term

Kennel & Multi-Animal Permits

Businesses involved in buying, selling, breeding, training, fostering, rescuing, or boarding animals must apply for a kennel permit, which requires a valid business license.

  • Business Registration Fee: $35 per year
  • Kennel Permit Fee: $100 for the first year, then $25 per year thereafter
  • Animal Limit: No more than seven animals per multi-animal residential or commercial site

The maximum allowable number of animals for kennel permits will be determined based on recommendations from an animal control officer or zoning official, ensuring adequate space, shelter, and sanitary conditions. Before approval, all multi-animal and kennel permit applicants must undergo an onsite inspection by the city’s animal control and zoning officials. Applications will be reviewed by the City’s Planning and Zoning Board, with final approval granted by the Governing Body.

Other Animals
Currently, pets outside of dogs and cats do not require licensing. However, all animals within city limits are subject to the City’s Animal Control Ordinance, as outlined in Chapter 3 of the Municipal Code.
