City of Truth or Consequences
About
Nestled along the scenic Rio Grande, Truth or Consequences is a vibrant community known for its rich history, rejuvenating hot springs, and welcoming spirit. Originally called Hot Springs, our city has long been a sanctuary for relaxation, with mineral-rich waters offering comfort and healing for generations. The first public bathhouse emerged in the late 19th century at John Cross Ranch over the legendary Geronimo Springs, marking the beginning of our legacy as a haven for wellness seekers.
Our transformation truly accelerated with the construction of Elephant Butte Dam and Reservoir in the early 1900s. Completed in 1916 as part of the Rio Grande Project—one of the earliest large-scale irrigation efforts under the Newlands Reclamation Act—this engineering marvel reshaped the region, spurring settlement and agricultural growth that continues to define our community today.
Beyond our renowned hot springs, Truth or Consequences thrives as a hub of art, culture, and adventure. Whether you’re soaking in our historic bathhouses, exploring the breathtaking landscapes of southern New Mexico, or connecting with the heart of our community, you'll find a city that embodies resilience, creativity, and the warmth of small-town hospitality.
